So currently whenever the “screen-capture” mode is open, any clip taken regardless if it was within a game or the actual desktop is categorised as a “screen recording” and therefore cannot be uploaded without premium to the medal servers.
I think what is happening essentially is while this feature is toggled on it just overrides the regular clipping feature and just takes a “screen recording” each time the user tries to take a clip.
Its super inconvinient having to toggle this feature on and off every time I boot-up a game in order to switch between uploadable clips and desktop clips.
My fix suggestion:
Medal should automatically recognise when the user boots-up a game and automatically switch to normal clip taking just like it does between different games. This means that while no games are running if a clip is taken it should be a screen-recording style clip however if a game is running the clip should prioritise the running game over the screen-capture feature.
Thanks for the feedback! This is on our radar, and we are planning an update for screen recording that would still allow for game detection and properly sorting the clips in the library / for uploads.
Any updates on this?
An idea might also be to utilise the “Toggle Game” hotkey for switching between desktop and game recording (and also cycling between games in the process) if desktop recording was turned on before and add a setting indicating whether Medal should switch automatically on game start.
Just downloaded Medal and was actually looking for this function, maybe a hotkey for toggling between screen and game.
Well. I’m here 3 months later, and this feature still doesn’t exist. I’ll stick to Shadowplay then.
Our dev teams are all working on other projects right now, specifically we have a version of our recorder in Early Access right now that’s a HUGE undertaking. Once we get this out to Stable branch, our team should have some capacity to work on this.
The only reason me and my friends use Shadowplay over medal is because it lacks this CRUCIAL function for clipping some funnies
