Make Clip Previews NOT pause when clicking on another window#815

Sometimes i want to quickly watch a clip. I open medal, click the clip to watch, and tab back to my other window (game, or web browser) on a second monitor. When I am in preview mode (i.e. not EDITOR), the clip pauses.

This forces me to open the editor, which I do not want to do.

From what I can tell, this is no longer an issue on the latest versions of Medal.

is there a fix for this? it just started today?

Surprisingly, most people requested the opposite. STOP playing clips if you click on another window. This is mostly because videos on Medal are short, so it’d just loop forever. It also uses resources to play a video, so if you go back to your game we want Medal to use the smallest amount of resources possible

Maybe make an option for it? I think users would be big fans of most options being toggle-able.

For example, I make a clip of WoW. I have WoW open on one monitor, and medal open on the other. I want to watch my clip on monitor 2 while still playing on monitor 1. When I made this suggestion, it was not possible to do so.

@Ian the more options, the more overwhelming it can be. But I appreciate the example you shared of WoW. I’ll think about how to handle it

Hey I play wow too and this is literally my only feedback on the program. It is hugely frustrating when you are grinding and trying to multitask, be productive etc. I would be so happy with an option to turn off this auto-pause stuff. This is a huge deal for wow players. I don’t want to be forced to stop what I’m doing when every other program on my computer supports multitasking perfectly fine.

My take on how to solve this would be to have a toggleable button in the video player/editor for either “auto pause” and if you wanna be extra “auto loop” that remembers what way it was toggled between sessions. It does not need to pollute the settings menu.

I’ll buy premium even though I don’t need any of its features if you implement this. I can’t stress enough how big a point of frustration this is, when everything else about this program is so great!

Hey. We made some changes to this behavior recently where we try to only pause the video if the app window is either not visible, or unfocused while a game is running. Previously it paused as soon as the app was unfocused. So the behavior has improved for users who like to watch video on a second monitor or similar, but I understand that it doesn’t solve for users who watch videos while gaming.

We wanted to get the behavior to pause only when the app is completely out of view (regardless of a game running or not), but there’s technical limitations currently blocking us from doing that. To be on the safer side, we decided to be more cautious when a game is running because it might affect game performance having a video playing in a separate window at the same time. The user might not be aware of the video playing if it’s below the game window and playing muted.

We can consider adding a setting that let users completely override the behavior so that they can watch videos while gaming too. I’ll forward that to the team. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey thanks for responding, glad to see a dev team that cares! Unfortunately my experience I described was with the Medal client on my second monitor, and the wow client on my main monitor. So if I understood your reply correctly, the app is not behaving like you intended and fixed it to on my machine. It was definitely the “on top” window of that monitor, and not on the same monitor as my game client. Thanks again for getting back to me.

I am talking about uploading a clip that I recorded. The trimming phase, if you will. I like to continue playing while I watch what I pre-selected to be trimmed to make sure it’s trimmed right. As per the screenshot.

I lack basic reading comprehension, you said >unfocused while a game is running< and that definitely covers my situation. Anyhow, thanks for listening to me the dumb end-user and taking my frustrations into account. Merry christmas if you celebrate this holiday!

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Right now, the video will pause if the app becomes unfocused while a game is running. This is what we could potentially let users override with a setting. The behavior is a little different when you don’t have a game running.

A setting to:
“Do not pause video when medal is unfocused” would be amazing.
If it doesn’t exist already, there should also be a “do not loop video” option. So that if I play the clip, and tab back to my game, I don’t have to tab back to the clip to pause it when it starts playing agin for the 3rd time.

Because again, there are many times where:

Something happens in game –> Clip
Game is on Monitor 1… I am still actively playing
Watch clip on Monitory 2… move mouse to Monitor 1 to continue playing game while watching clip on Monitor 2.
BUT – if I do this, clip pauses. I must stop playing my game (on monitor 1) to watch the clip.

It isn’t “detrimental” to my experience or anything… but it is definitely annoying.

I will say this feedback tool is quite cool, though. Sorry I have not replied to other comments in here, but Lupa.l and I have the same mindset, I think.
